Starr Commonwealth Names Elizabeth Carey as Our New President and CEO

Starr Commonwealth has appointed Elizabeth Carey as the successor to its current President and CEO Dr. Martin Mitchell, who announced his retirement plans in January, after 45 years of service to Starr.

Carey has served Starr as Chief Strategy Officer for the last five years and will begin the transition to her new position as President and CEO on June 1st 2015, with Dr. Mitchell working closely with her on the handover during the summer, before serving Starr in an advisory capacity until his retirement in January 2016.

Announcing the appointment of Carey, Hon. John Hallacy, Chair of Starr’s board of trustees, said: “In planning for Dr. Mitchell’s retirement, our board of trustees conducted a rigorous search for an appropriate successor. Having considered a strong field of candidates, we are confident that Elizabeth Carey is the right person to lead Starr into its second century of creating environments where children and families flourish. Elizabeth brings an extensive track record of successful leadership within the human service field and has been instrumental in the strategic development of Starr in recent years. Our board of trustees looks forward to working with Elizabeth on how Starr can continue to meet the needs of children and families, always seeing their strengths before their challenges and believing in their potential. I would like to thank Marty Mitchell for his outstanding service to Starr Commonwealth and for his support in the succession process. I also thank our board of trustees for volunteering their time to make sure we appointed the strongest possible leader for this organization.”

Commenting on her appointment as President and CEO, Elizabeth Carey said: “To be given the opportunity to lead Starr Commonwealth is truly an honor. With 102 years’ experience of serving children and families, underpinned by a belief in their strengths and resilience, we have significant opportunities ahead of us. Our staff are positively impacting on thousands of children and families each day, with the goal of unleashing their full potential, regardless of their challenges. By continually improving our services in education, behavioral health, youth development, and training for professionals, we can ensure that we meet the evolving needs of the community in ways that are most impactful and sustainable.”

Carey added: “As well as delivering industry leading services, we are committed to telling the inspiring stories of young people in our community and inviting our stakeholders to invest in our vital mission. We have always been an advocate for focusing on the strengths of young people, but we want to go further and make sure the community at large can recognize and celebrate the incredible things young people are achieving. Starr is here for all children and families, regardless of whether they use our services, and we intend to stand up for what they need in order to flourish.”

Starr’s current President and CEO, Dr. Martin Mitchell, said: “Having had the pleasure of working directly with Elizabeth for the last five years, I am very confident that she will be a passionate, dedicated and successful President and CEO of Starr Commonwealth for many years to come. Elizabeth has already served Starr with great success, and will bring the kind of knowledge and energy needed to lead the organization well into its second century. All of us at Starr congratulate her on this fantastic achievement!”

Before joining Starr in 2010, Carey served as Chief Operations Officer at the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities, having also held the position of Executive Director of the Michigan Federation for Children and Families and, before that, Director of Government Relations for the Council on Accreditation (COA). Carey is married with two children and lives in Jackson, Mich.
