Meet Our Team
Dr. Caelan Soma, PsyD, LMSW, Vice President of Clinical Development, provides trauma assessment and short-term trauma intervention for students utilizing trauma-informed and evidence-based practices, including TLC’s SITCAP® model.
Dr. Soma has been involved in helping with the aftermath of disasters such as Sandy Hook, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, 9/11 and more. She is has authored several books, the most recent, Working with Grieving and Traumatized Children and Adolescents.
She is an internationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, and is the instructor for many TLC courses, including Children of Trauma and Structured Sensory Interventions. Derek Allen, MA, ACTP
serves as Vice President of Programs for Starr Commonwealth, a 105 year-old human service organization based in Michigan. In this capacity Derek provides administrative leadership and supervision to all Starr programs as well as leads the organization’s business development efforts. Programs include residential treatment, community-based behavioral health services, the resilient schools and communities initiative, and professional training and consulting.
In addition to his role as VP of Programs, Derek serves as a Senior Consultant for the Starr Global Learning Network (SGLN). In this role, Derek trains professionals throughout North America in use of the Circle of Courage model, leads adults through complex discussions related to diversity and racial healing, and provides practical, evidence-based training in trauma-informed care.
He also provides “thought-leadership” to the Starr Commonwealth organization in the areas of strength-based approaches in education and treatment and building resilience in children and families. Derek is currently pursuing a doctoral degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Kathy Hart, MA, Director of Starr Global Learning Network, has dedicated her 23-year career to helping children and families in a variety of capacities. Her experience with youth and family services have encompassed both clinical and administrative roles. She has over 15 years of experience training at Starr Commonwealth in a variety of subjects, including behavior management techniques, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and has been a Certified Trauma Practitioner for 7 years. She has also been a program administrator and worked with IT to implement and manage electronic health records organization wide. Kathy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Bowling Green State University and a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Erin Reed, Resilience Coach at Starr, has spent the past 6 years working as an academic and behavioral interventionist in elementary and middle schools. She is passionate about creating environments, and nurturing practices that best serve children, families, and communities. She has trained in school based mindfulness practice, and has developed curriculum for mindfulness practices in the classroom and led workshops in mindfulness for adults and children. Erin began her journey with mindfulness 22 years ago. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College where she studied mind/body practices, and multi-cultural counseling..
