Starr Detroit Academy
Starr Detroit Academy is an open admissions, public charter school serving K-5 children near the east side of Detroit.
The school is made possible in part by the legacy of Children’s Home of Detroit, which ended its services in 2008. Starr Commonwealth, as successor to the property owned by the 172-year-old organization, pledged to reinvest CHD resources into services for youth in the metropolitan area.
Starr Detroit Academy is grounded in a strength-based approach focused on early intervention for our at-risk students and families.
Starr Commonwealth’s experience and expertise will help shape and sustain the positive environments created for Starr Detroit Academy students.
Educate, Empower and Excel represent the three questions that drive our students and staff on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour and minute-to-minute basis.
Educate - What are you doing today to improve yourself?
Empower - How will you use your skills to author your own future?
Excel - Are your actions today preparing yourself for where you want to be tomorrow?
The mission of Starr Detroit Academy is to prepare students for academic mastery, college, work and life.
Through our mission, each child will develop:
- Strong character, self-confidence and a deep awareness of their own strengths, interests and ability
- A great academic foundation in the core subjects
- The values and work ethic necessary for success in college, work and the community
The core values of Starr Detroit Academy reflect its service to both boys and girls, including honesty, excellence, compassion, respect and responsibility.
Excellence - We focus on results and do whatever it takes to accomplish our goals.
Respect - We treat other people like we want to be treated. We take care of our environment so others do the same.
Responsibility - We recognize our strengths, learn from our mistakes and assume ownership for our actions.
Perseverance - We work hard and never give up. Even when the work is challenging, we will succeed.
Caring - We take care of each other. We help each other. We do not hurt each other physically or emotionally.
