Over a decade ago, there were many families and children in Calhoun County using Starr Commonwealth’s home-based services.  Such interest encouraged us to expand some of our programs and create Starr Battle Creek.  In 1997, we acquired the locally, well-known Battle Creek Child Guidance Center and have grown into our current location on Garfield Avenue.

Battle Creek Programs

Day Treatment
The Day Treatment program provides supervision and treatment for boys and girls who have been adjudicated. This program is under contract with the Calhoun County Juvenile Court. Referrals must come through a court order from a judge or referee. Supervision is provided during and after school hours, seven days per week. This is a community-based program that is intended to prevent repeat offenses and out-of-home placement. Children receive treatment through group meetings and positive peer culture treatment on a daily basis.

Juvenile Diversion Program (JDP)

When it comes to troubled kids, harsh punishment isn't necessarily the answer. Starr's Juvenile Diversion Program (JDP) allows nonviolent first-time offenders to avoid making the same mistakes while improving in areas where they have struggled, both academically and behaviorally.JDP was created as a positive alternative to formal court processing, providing an opportunity for rehabilitative and educational programming instead of prosecution. The 12-week program takes troubled kids through a step-by-step improvement process, teaching self-awareness, respect for others, goal setting, anger management, communication, employment skills and more. The program now operates from the Starr Battle Creek location at 155 Garfield Ave.

Suspension Center

At the Suspension Center, students are provided with a supervised academic setting where they can continue their school assignments while on suspension. The length of stay can very from two days to an entire school year, depending on each student's circumstances. The Suspension Center now operates from 8:00am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday from the Starr Battle Creek location at 155 Garfield Ave.

Credit Enhancement Program

When a child is motivated to succeed academically, he or she needs as much support as possible. The Credit Enhancement Program allows students to take extra credits and courses that may not be offered at their school using Education 2020 programming, a comprehensive online courseware system. While in our supportive learning environment and guided by a certified teacher, students complete their coursework online. It's convenient, self-guided and provides students with greatly expanded learning opportunities. The Credit Enhancement Program now operates from the Starr Battle Creek location at 155 Garfield Ave.

Mental Health
The Mental Health program provides children, ages 4 to 17, with therapeutic ways of addressing their psychological issues and learning to cope with their situations. The goal of this community-based program is to reduce the need for out-of-home placement.

Supervised Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is a service provided to children between the ages of 16-20 under a contract with the Department of Human Services. The goal is to help children make the transition to independence which includes addressing the areas of education, employment, and housing. All SIL students must live in non-residential, community-based placement approved by the referring CMO or FIA representative.

Foster Care
Foster Care is for children between the ages of 0-18 who have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect. Whether children are temporary or permanent wards of the state, county or court, placement counselors make sure children have secure places with caring foster parents.

The end goal is to reunite families whenever possible, but if not, Starr supervises children through to permanent placement. The key to success is doing more than placement. Starr works with families to change values, and works with kids to repair the damages from abuse and neglect.
